MIRAI CODE · Small Enough Not to Scare

To You Who Wants to Change but Can't

You aren't weak — your mind is doing its job. So make the change too small to frighten it.

Mirai — a Future Decoder who reads the sounds of your name

"This year, for sure," you thought. And before you know it — right back where you started.

Do you sigh at that self of yours: "I really am hopeless"?

In my readings, I meet so many hard workers who resolve, again and again, then slip back — and go on blaming themselves for it.

The truth is — even I, writing this to you now, have a "self that can't change" inside me.

Two e-book manuscripts, finished right through proofreading. And seven more, planned as a series, already roughly written. And yet — "the product still isn't ready." "The course prep isn't done." "Once I get it a little more in order…" And so, telling myself "someday, surely," I keep failing to press the publish button.

The words I long to deliver are right there, in front of me. And still — that one last step, somehow, I cannot take. Yes: even as I write all this so knowingly, I am, right now, in the very thick of it myself.

Not changing is proof your heart is working just as it should

The truth is, our hearts hold a powerful force that works to protect things as they are.

To the heart, change is the unknown — and a little frightening. So, unconsciously, it puts on the brakes, and tries to draw you back to the safe, familiar place.

Which means — that you can't change is not a sign your will is weak. It is proof your heart is working, exactly as it should. So first of all, please: stop blaming yourself, there.

So — make the change "small enough not to be scary"

The bigger the change you attempt, the harder the heart slams its brakes.

The trick is to make it a step so small the heart never sounds its alarm. Not "run every morning," but "put your shoes on at the door." Not "go to bed early," but "get into the bath five minutes sooner." Absurdly small is fine. Only what continues becomes, one day, a great change.

The sounds of your name reveal the pace of change that suits you

The sounds of your name carry the pace of change that fits you — whether you're the type to move all at once, or the type to go slowly, and surely. Choose a way of changing that matches your own rhythm, and you can go on, unstrained, at your own pace.

What I am really doing, in every reading

So to those who ache over being unable to change, the first thing I hand them is reassurance: "That you can't change is not your fault." When the self-blame eases, a person can, quite suddenly, take that next step.

In the end

Simply to hold the feeling "I want to change" means you have, already, taken the first step.

There is no need to rush. Small — small enough not to be scary. At your own pace, little by little, is just fine.
