MIRAI CODE · The Courage to Rest

To You Who Can't Stop Pushing Yourself

A clenched hand can't hold water — and letting go was never the same as giving up.

Mirai — a Future Decoder who reads the sounds of your name

Stand still, and you feel anxious. Rest, and guilt creeps in. "I have to try harder." Are you driving yourself on, like that?

In my readings, I meet so many people for whom pushing hard has become so ordinary that they've forgotten how to ease off at all. And it is the earnest ones — the deeply responsible, the lovely ones — who feel it most.

— I, too, was the very worst at resting.

Cooking, housework, work — I couldn't cut a single corner in any of it. Late at night, long past the hour to sleep, I would still be at the computer, fingers on the keys. (Just a little more. Once I finish this one thing.) My head was always, always full of things left to do.

— Children are forever watching their mama, aren't they. Right there beside me, as I vanished into my own world of work, my son couldn't even say the words "let's go to sleep together." He simply waited, quietly — holding the loneliness back, hard, in his small chest.

One night, I happened to glance over. And from those little eyes, a single tear spilled, and fell.

— And at that one drop, the hand that would not stop, at last, stopped.

A clenched hand cannot scoop up water

When we push ourselves too hard, the heart fills with the frequency of tension.

When you cup water in your hands, grip too tightly and it only spills away. It is the softly, gently opened hand that the water gathers in.

The heart is just the same: it is when you loosen your hold that the good current comes flowing back.

Letting go is not giving up

The people for whom life flows well tend to hold, skillfully, the rhythm between pushing and easing off.

Just as a car with its foot forever on the accelerator will one day run out of breath, we, too, need our times to loosen, and to rest.

To let go is not to give up. It is to trust the flow — "It's alright; things will work out." And that is a choice that takes real courage.

The sounds of your name reveal how you're meant to use your energy

The sounds of your name hold the way of using energy that suits you — whether you're the type to move in short, intense bursts, or the type to keep on, slow and steady, for the long stretch.

Once you know your own rhythm, you can shift from a way of trying that strains you, to the way of moving that fits you best of all.

What I am really doing, in every reading

So to the hard workers, the first thing I say is this:

"You are already trying more than enough."

Permission — to ease off, just a little. And when someone can receive it, their face softens, all at once, back into something gentle.

In the end

Every so often, it's perfectly all right to have a day where you don't push at all.

For every bit of tension you release, a small gap opens — and through it, a new current can come in.

You are all right, even without pushing so hard. Today, let your shoulders drop, just a little, and take one deep breath.
